Background check – Add beautiful texture to the background using embossing folders

Hello everyone and welcome to idea #3 for background check series. If you are new here, nice to meet you! :-) This month we are exploring ways to enhance the background for our card focal point. You can check out the earlier posts in this series by clicking here.

Today’s idea is a simple but powerful one – using embossing folders to add texture and interest to card backgrounds. Here is what I made with this idea today.

For this card as with previous cards, I kept my focal point really simple by cutting out this cute donut from one of the patterned papers. I also cut out a matching sentiment strip from the same paper pack – “Donut worry, be happy!”. For both these, I inked the edges a little bit to define them better. I also rounded corners for the donut piece.

For my background, I created a panel slightly smaller than my standard sized card base using Neenah Exact Index Gray paper. I rounded two right corners for my card base as well as this gray panel. Then I ran the gray panel though my Sizzix machine using Darrice Brick Wall embossing folder. Look at that gorgeous texture it added.

Lastly I adhered all the elements – some with scor tape and some with foam tape, added enamel dots and some shimmer using wink of stella. Here’s a close up {sorry, the pictures did not capture the subtle shimmer on those tiny hearts, but in real life it looks beautiful!}:

Here are some more ideas with this technique:

  1. Partially emboss on one side, leave some open area and emboss from the other side to create a panel in the middle. Click on the link to check out more about this idea:

  2. Directly emboss the card front like this one here:

  3. Combine dry embossing (with embossing folder) and heat embossing for a fun design:
    Kraft-White-Gold-a
  4. Instead of a full / rectangular embossed panel, create a shaped panel. Also in this example below, I used a color-blocked patterned paper for a fun twist.
