Monthly Discovery Instagram Hop July 2024 - Summer theme + Stencils technique

Hi friends, I am continuing on my mission of using craft supplies I have already purchased before buying new one and the Monthly Discovery Hop is definitely helping!

This month the theme was Summer and technique Stencils. Combining several different products that I had, I created this fun little card:

I started by using a panel of pale blue cardstock which I had already die cut for some other project. I knew I wanted to ink blend and dry emboss on top, so first I stamped my sentiment with Archival Black ink using Tim Holtz Stamping Platform. This way I was able to stamp clean lines while my paper was still smooth, instead of doing it on a paper that had raised details after dry embossing.

In case you are wondering, dry embossing is the technique where you add texture (raised areas) by passing your stencil and paper through a die cutting machine. The sandwich for my Spellbinders Platinum was

  • base platform

  • stencil

  • paper (taped to stencil to hold it in place)

  • gray / tan soft embossing mat

  • cardstock shim (because my paper and stencil both were not very thick)

  • black hard embossing plate

After dry embossing, I used the same stencil with Simon Says Stamp Sky Blue ink to add tone-on-tone color in two diagonal corners (the ones on either side of my sentiment).

Next I stamped, fussy cut, and colored my hot air balloon. Here are the colors I used:

Then I did a bunch of die cutting by combining two different sets from Spellbinders (all supplies linked below) for the flowers and leaves around my balloon, assembled the design and added gems.

Just to bring in the white of the flowers and add another subtle area of white to it, I trimmed the panel a little on the right side and the bottom and made it slightly smaller than a standard A2 sized card. Lastly I adhered this panel lined up with bottom right corner of my white cardbase. It left a narrow white border on two sides - top and left - and brought in a tiny element of surprise.

That's all. Tell me what idea from this card did you like and which one you are planning to implement? I love to hear from you guys :-)
