My Favorite Things is having a contest for Card Design Superstar and here is my entry for it. I made a double shaker – a shaker within a shaker. 🙂
This took a bit of engineering / science along with some art, but once you get the concept, it is really easy to put together. Here’s a step of how you can make something similar:
- Outer panel
- I took Starthmore watercolor paper and cut it same size as the card front.
- Then I did some wet-on-wet red / yellow color using Gansai Tambi watercolors. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process. 😉
- On this panel, I arranged all my dies and flowers to figure out placements of where I wanted each element.
- Next I cut out the bigger heart using largest die from Stitched Heart Stax dies from MFT. The negative piece is used for the card panel.
- Inner Shaker
- I lined up two of the smallest hearts from the same die set and taped them together using some washi tape.
- I used these taped hearts and cut out my inner shaker using white fun foam. Before cutting, I added double sided adhesive sheet to both sides of the fun foam so that it would be easy to assemble. I did not take out the release paper till the time I was actually assembling.
- While I had the hearts taped together, I also cut out the cover for my inner shaker from the positive die cut from above step. This way it matched rest of my panel.
- Outer Shaker
- Next I cut covered another piece of fun foam with adhesive on both sides but left the release paper intact. This one was cut to be slightly smaller than the outer panel.
- I lined it up under the outer panel, arranged the largest heart die and cut it out of the foam piece.
- Shaker Assembly:
- I started by cutting out two pieces of transparency – each the same size as my large fun foam piece.
- I adhered one of these pieces at the back of my outer watercolored panel.
- Onto this I adhered the two foam pieces – the larger one with the big heart cut out and the smaller heart in it center. I pressed these down firmly so that the transparency stuck to it securely. Next I went around the edges with my powder tool to remove any extra adhesive sticking out.
- Then I took off the release paper on the other side of the foam and carefully added my confetti hearts in each shaker panel – red on the inside one, gold on the outside one.
- To secure everything, I added another piece of transparency on top and pressed down with my fingers so that all the adhesive on the foam would stick to the transparency.
- Sentiments
- For the main sentiment, I used gold foil paper and die cut the word “grateful” from it. I lined it up on the front of my shaker panel and stamped “for you” with chipped sapphire distress ink. I adhered the “grateful” with some glossy accents.
- I selected a bluish – gray card base from a stack of blank note cards I had purchased from Michaels. On the inside of this card, I stamped the sentiment – “a simple thank you with a lot of heart” (to go with all the hearts on my card!). I also adhered a couple pieces of confetti around the sentiment to bring the outside design in.
- Finishing touches
- Finally I adhered my shaker piece to the front of my card and embellished it with some ribbon roses + a yellow flower from my stash. I also tucked in a couple swirlies that I die cut using a die from MFT tag builder blueprints 5 die set.
Here are some more close up of this card and also a couple more cards I made using the same technique and almost same supplies.
Hope you like all these ideas and feel inspired to try something like this.
